Zend
Zend is an open source scripting engine for PHP4 and PHP5. The performance, reliability, and extensibility of the engine played an important role in increasing the popularity of PHP.
One of the features of the Zend engine is its ability to decode PHP scripts. Certain scripts like vBSEO and ModernBill require an encoder so they can run. Another encoder that is used is ionCube.
