Thanks for the response, AIGA. The concept of having multiple designers compete for a prize is called "crowdsourcing." And it's also great marketing, which is actually the main reason for doing this.

If someone thinks it's unethical, they don't have to participate. If someone thinks their design skills aren't up to par, they don't have to participate.

If you really want to complain to someone, head on over to SitePoint, where they devote an entire section to contests on everything from logos to coded templates.

We'll be running another contest too, looking forward to your response!

People may, at times, request you to do speculative work—that is, work done for no cost. AIGA (the professional association for design) believes that doing speculative work seriously compromises the quality of work that clients are entitled to and also violates a tacit, long-standing ethical standard in the communication design profession worldwide.

"But they're offering $420 to the winner? They're paying."

Design is a process. It includes the brainstorming, drafts and revisions that Crucial is asking all of you people who don't win to do for free. It might sound fun, but it's truly unethical.

AIGA strongly discourages the practice of requesting that design work be produced and submitted on a speculative basis in order to be considered for acceptance on a project.

See AIGA's letter on this topic: http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm/position-spec-work

Nice idea.

If I have some time I might submit something myself.
